Samsung announced a pair of digital cameras Wednesday morning: the 7.2 mega-pixel S760 and the 8.1 mega-pixel S860, both budget cameras priced at $169 and $179 respectively. Besides the differences in megapixels, they are both identical cameras.
Both offer 3X optical zoom, image stabilization, face detection and a self portrait mode, along with a 38mm-to-105mm-equivalent lens. The self portrait mode in conjunction with face detection will make sure the subject is centered before taking a shot. It might be a useful feature, but until we see it in action we'll reserve judgment.
Both cameras can shoot video in either 320x240 or 640x480 rsolutions, at 30 frames per second, in AVI (MJPEG) format. Image stabilization works in the video mode as well.
The "E" button provides onscreen editing such as resizing and retouching an image, and it can shoot video at 640x480 at 30 frames per second in MPEG format.
Both are scheduled to ship in January. While they are priced to move, neither seems to offer much to stand out from an ever-increasing crowd of sub-$200 competitors.
