WATERLOO, Ont. - Dalsa Corp. (TSX:DSA - news) boosted its fourth-quarter earnings by more than a third as the company generated fatter sales of digital cameras, flat panel screen technology and semiconductors.

The southwestern Ontario-based maker of semiconductors and digital imaging technology, reported late Thursday its three month earnings rose to $2.3 million, up nearly 37 per cent from $1.7 million in the same period of 2006.

Per share earnings growth rose to 12 cents for the quarter ended Dec. 31 from nine cents for the same period last year.

Meanwhile, revenues rose 9.3 per cent to $47.3 million, up from $43.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2006.

"Our results this quarter are a strong indication that we are on our way to returning the company to its traditional levels of profitability," said CEO Brian Doody. "In our core businesses, we are seeing strong product demand, not only in key areas such as flat panel display and MEMS (computer chips), but across the board. I am also pleased to report that the initiatives we recently undertook to improve our operating results have begun to have a positive impact on gross margins and profitability. Furthermore, our record order backlog gives me confidence about our prospects in 2008."

In the fourth quarter, digital Imaging revenues were $26.8 million, up 18.4 per cent from the third quarter as several large and long awaited flat panel display capital equipment contracts were awarded to Dalsa's customers, driving orders for delivery of the company's, display technology, cameras and frame grabber products.

Semiconductor revenues jumped nearly 21 per cent to $20.1 million over the third quarter.

Dalsa employs about 1,000 people around the world and designs, develops, manufactures, and markets digital imaging products and software and specialized integrated circuit and electronics technology, software, and highly engineered semiconductor wafer processing.
