Leica grabs bragging rights with `fastest' lens (AP)

AP - Before camera manufacturers one-upped each other with the number of megapixels, they one-upped each other with the zoom range of their lenses. And before that, in the 1960s, the "speed" of the lens, its ability to gather light, was the big selling point. Full text

Canon Patent Sheds More Light on Fuel-Cell Plans (PC Magazine)

Last May, Canon applied for the patent of a fuel cell technology to power its DSLR cameras.

What we know of the technology is that it's a system comprised of multiple fuel cells which have different voltage outputs. With the second patent filed by the company, the fuel cell's use has been made a bit clearer.

Apparently, Canon plans to create a fuel cell which will not only power the DSLR cameras themselves, but the peripherals used for photography as well such as hotshoe flash units and camera lenses.

It does seem favorable because there will only be one power source, and hence, there are lesser batteries to be sent to landfills. For those who use their DSLR cameras too often, it could be worth the investment to buy the fuel cell and its cartridge (because I doubt they will come cheap).

However, for those who don't use their cameras nearly as much, it might be better to stick to rechargeable batteries. This is because unlike MTI Micro's fuel cells which aren't tied to a particular brand and could be used for a range of devices, Canon's could be (we're still not sure) exclusive to the company's digital cameras only.
